MLB: Toronto 3, Tampa Bay 1

TORONTO, July 28 (UPI) -- A.J. Burnett struck out 10 over seven innings Monday in the Toronto Blue Jays' 3-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays.

Burnett (12-9) allowed only one run on six hits with four walks for Toronto, which has won six of its last seven games. The right-hander matched his career-high for wins in a season.

Matt Stairs hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning for Toronto, which had only five hits.

James Shields (9-7) gave up three runs on five hits in 7 1/3 innings. An RBI groundout by Carlos Pena drove in the only run for Tampa Bay, which left nine runners on base.

The Rays maintained a one-game lead over Boston for first-place in the AL East, when the Red Sox fell to the LA Angels 7-5 Monday.
