MLB: San Diego 3, Pittsburgh 1

PITTSBURGH, July 27 (UPI) -- Jake Peavy gave up an earned run in seven innings Sunday, pacing the San Diego Padres' 3-1 win at Pittsburgh.

Peavy (8-6) gave up only four hits with three walks and 10 strikeouts. He rose to 5-1 in seven lifetime starts against the Pirates.

Closer Trevor Hoffman recorded his 21st save this season by pitching a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth.

Jerry Hairston Jr.'s homer to lead off the top of the eighth inning broke a 1-1 tie and proved to be the eventual game-winning run. Josh Bard added a solo shot in the ninth.

The first run scored on Bard's fourth-inning single, giving him two of the seven hits for the Padres, who have won three in a row after dropping nine of their previous 10 games.

Pittsburgh scored on Adam LaRoche's fourth-inning single.

Three others had one hit for the Pirates, losers of three straight following a four-game winning streak.

The losing pitcher was reliever John Grabow (5-3).
