BOURBONNAIS, Ill., July 25 (UPI) -- In a surprise move, Chicago Bears kick returner Devin Hester reported Friday to the team's training camp in Bourbonnais, Ill.
The all-pro missed the first two days of training camp, and on Thursday, the Bears placed him on their "did not report" list.
The move came in spite of a promise by the Bears' second-round pick out of Miami-Fla. to sit out the entire 2008-09 season.
The Chicago Tribune reported that Hester's arrival Thursday night surprised some of his teammates.
"`I'm glad he's here," special teams coordinator Dave Toub told the Chicago Sun-Times. "I'm not surprised. The fact is teams probably still would not kick to him if he showed up the day before the season started. It's a relief for him. It's a relief for everybody. He can get the offense down."
In his rookie season in 2006, Hester established an NFL record for kick returns for touchdowns (five), and in 2007, he totaled six returns for touchdowns.
