Report: Hoops star signs with Italian team

WASHINGTON, July 16 (UPI) -- Scholastic basketball phenom Brandon Jennings has signed a multiyear, multimillion dollar contract to play in Italy, a Washington Post report said Wednesday.

The 6-foot point guard from Los Angeles said last week that he intended to play abroad next season.

His adviser, Sonny Vaccaro, confirmed the signing in a phone interview with the newspaper Wednesday afternoon.

Vaccaro added that specific terms of the deal will not be released until a press conference on July 23 in Rome.

Earlier this week, Vaccaro told the newspaper that teams from Italy, Russia, Spain and Greece were showing interest.

The move, announced after three days of participating in unorganized workouts in front of team representatives from seven different countries, will make the Oak Hill, Va., star the first American high school player to bypass the NBA's 18-year-old age requirement and play overseas.

Previously, Jennings was offered a scholarship at the University of Arizona in Tucson.
