WIMBLEDON, England, June 30 (UPI) -- Highly seeded women players continued to fall Monday at Wimbledon while Serena and Venus Williams displayed solid play.
Second-seeded Jelena Jankovic and No. 4 Svetlana Kuznetsova were each defeated Monday, leaving fifth-seeded Elena Dementieva the only playing remaining who is seeded higher than No. 6 Serena and No. 7 Venus.
Jankovic fell in straight sets to unseeded Tamarine Tanasugarn, 6-3, 6-2 and Kuznetsova lost 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 to 14th-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska in Monday's fourth-round play.
Dementieva was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over No. 24 Shahar Peer but the Williams sisters were also impressive. Serena Williams dumped Bethanie Mattek 6-3, 6-3 and Venus Williams, the defending Wimbledon champion, took out Alisa Kleybanova 6-3, 6-4.
Also Monday, No. 18 Nicole Vaidisova upset No. 8 Anna Chakvetadze 4-6, 7-6 (7-0), 6-3, Jie Zheng beat 15th-seeded Agnes Szavay 6-3, 6-4 and 21st-seeded Nadia Petrova topped Alla Kudryavtseva 6-1, 6-4.
The quarterfinals pairings in the top half of the draw have Serena Williams playing Radwanska and Vaidisova going against Zheng. In the other half of the draw, Dementieva faces Petrova and Venus Williams meets Tanasugarn.
