Spain tops Germany for Euro 2008 title

VIENNA, June 29 (UPI) -- Spain won its first European soccer championship in 44 years Sunday, defeating Germany 1-0 on a goal by Fernando Torres.

Torres knocked the ball just inside the left post in the 33rd minute of the tense battle in Vienna. He had nearly scored 10 minutes earlier with a shot that hit the post.

Spain, which had not won the European title since 1964, has a 22-match winning streak.
