WIMBLEDON, England, June 27 (UPI) -- Mario Ancic beat No. 5-seeded David Ferrer in four sets Friday, adding to the high-profile upsets in the men's draw of The Championships at Wimbledon.

With half the third round still to be played, just three -- No. 1 Roger Federer, No. 2 Rafael Nadal and No. 8 Richard Gasquet -- of the top nine men's seeds remain. Nadal and Gasquet play third-round matches Saturday.

Ancic took a spirited 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-3) match from Ferrer. The world No. 5 was down two sets but battled gamely and took the third set in a tiebreaker. He forced another tiebreaker in the fourth set but Ancic quickly established control and was able to put the match away.

Federer, looking for a sixth consecutive Wimbledon title, was workmanlike in a 6-3, 6-3, 6-1 win over Marc Gicquel in his third-round match. He heads into a round-of-16 pairings against 20th-seeded Lleyton Hewitt, who took out Simone Bolelli, 6-1, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2), in the third round.

No. 11-seeded Tomas Berdych joined the other ousted high seeds on the sidelines after 22nd-seeded Fernando Verdasco took a 6-4, 6-4, 6-0 decision. Verdasco goes against Ancic in the fourth round.

The fourth fourth-round match in the top half of the draw has No. 10-seeded Marcos Baghdatis playing No. 31 Feliciano Lopez. Baghdatis defeated Simon Stadler, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4, 6-2, while Lopez eliminated Bobby Reynolds, 6-4, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, in Friday. Reynolds was the last American in the men's draw.
