Alabama player cut after drug charges

BIRMINGHAM, Ala., June 25 (UPI) -- Linebacker Jimmy Johns has been dismissed from the University of Alabama football team after his arrest on multiple counts of selling cocaine.

The senior from Brookhaven, Miss., was arrested early Tuesday morning by the West Alabama Narcotics Task Force and was taken to Tuscaloosa County Jail.

"Jimmy Johns has been dismissed from the team," Coach Nick Saban said in a statement. "This type of behavior obviously will not be tolerated and he is no longer a part of our program."

A police report indicated that cocaine and marijuana were involved initially, and when Johns' residence was searched the drug "ecstasy" also was found.

Johns' case was referred to the Southeastern Conference school's Judicial Affairs department and he was suspended because of the university's zero tolerance policy related to drug trafficking.

Johns, the 2004 Mr. Football at Brookhaven (Mass.) High School, was released on $120,000 bond late Wednesday morning.

He is the 10th Alabama football player arrested since Saban became head coach in January 2007.
