Zambrano to have ailing shoulder examined

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., June 19 (UPI) -- Chicago Cubs pitcher Carlos Zambrano, forced from Wednesday's game in Florida, is scheduled to have his shoulder examined in Chicago, his manager says.

Cubs Manager Lou Piniella said Zambrano was pulled from the game against the Tampa Bay Rays due to shoulder discomfort in an attempt to prevent additional injury, the Chicago Tribune said.

"He had discomfort, we had to get him out and that's all we know," Piniella said. "We did the right thing getting him out of there, obviously. Now we'll hope for the best. That's all we can do."

Zambrano, who had a 5.68 earned run average during his last four starts, said he was hopeful that an MRI of his shoulder wouldn't reveal any significant damage.

"We'll see what happens (Thursday)," Zambrano said. "Hopefully it's nothing bad. I feel good ... just tendinitis, hopefully, and they'll put me on some medicine."
