Schweinsteiger, given his first start of the tournament, produced a goal in the 22nd minute and then delivered a perfect cross to Klose five minutes later to put Germany in charge.

Michael Ballack delivered the eventual game-winner in the second half.

German Coach Joachim Loew had to watch from the stands after being suspended for one game for arguing with the referee during his team's win over Austria earlier in the tournament.

Turkey and Croatia will meet Friday, the Netherlands will play Russia on Saturday and the quarterfinals will conclude Sunday with Spain taking on Italy.
