Terrell Owens missing at required practice

IRVING, Texas, June 17 (UPI) -- The Dallas Cowboys started their three-day mandatory mini-camp Tuesday without star wideout Terrell Owens.

Dallas officials said Owens missed practice because of a personal matter.

Owens signed a three-year, $27 million contract extension this month before news broke that he was placed in the NFL's "reasonable cause" testing program after missing a drug test.

The veteran wide receiver blamed the missed test, and subsequent missed calls by the league office to Owens, on a mix-up of phone numbers. Owens will be subject to as many as 24 random tests in the next calendar year.

Owens was present for a physical Monday, and attended a team meeting Tuesday before leaving.

Owens, 34, caught 81 passes in 15 games for 1,355 yards and 15 touchdowns last season. In 12 NFL seasons with San Francisco, Philadelphia and Dallas, Owens has 882 receptions for 13,070 yards and 129 touchdowns.
