Vaidisova, Bondarenko avoid DFS upsets

BIRMINGHAM, England, June 12 (UPI) -- Nicola Vaidisova and Alona Bondarenko both came from behind Thursday in third-round play at the $200,000 DFS Classic tennis tournament in England.

Vaidisova, seeded third, lost the first in the tiebreaker before putting away Ekaterina Makarova 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-4. Bondarenko, seeded fifth, stumbled to a 3-6 first-set loss and then rallied for the 3-65, 7-5, 6-1 win over Sunitha Rao.

No. 12-seeded Kateryna Bondarenko, Alona's sister, was made the DFS quarterfinals, and also dropped the first set before closing the match 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 to eliminate Melinda Czink.

Two seeded players were ousted with No. 8 Michaella Krajicek falling 6-3, 6-4 to Yanina Wickmayer and 17th-seeded Aiko Nakamura losing 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 to Melanie South.

Also Thursday, Petra Cetkovska topped Camille Pin 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3; Marina Erakovic beat Yaroslava Shvedova 6-3, 7-5; and Bethanie Mattek defeated Tamarine Tanasugarn 6-4, 6-2.

Friday's quarterfinals will pit Vaidisova against Mattek, Alona Bondarenko versus Erakovic, Kateryna Bondarenko against Cetkovska and Wickmayer versus South.
