MLB: Oakland 8, N.Y. Yankees 4

OAKLAND, Calif., June 12 (UPI) -- Jack Cust and Carlos Gonzalez both drove in two runs during a six-run third Wednesday, leading Oakland to an 8-4 victory over the New York Yankees.

New York lost to an American League West opponent for the first time in eight games this season.

Justin Duchscherer (6-4) backed up the early offensive outburst by allowing New York a run on five hits over seven innings. He has won all five of his home starts this year and his performance gave Oakland plenty of breathing room to survive a three-run Yankees ninth.

Jason Giambi put New York in front with a second-inning homer, but the Athletics roughed up Darrell Rasner in the third.

Giambi's throwing error allowed Travis Buck to reach leading off the inning and, one out later, Jack Hannahan delivered an infield single.

Bobby Crosby doubled home the first run of the inning and Cust singled home both Hannahan and Crosby.

Eric Chavez singled, moving Cust to second, and Mark Ellis singled to score Cust. A double by Gonzalez brought home Chavez and Ellis to make it 6-1.

Rasner (3-4) was eventually charged with seven runs on nine hits in 3 2/3 innings.
