Detroit pitcher out with blood clot

DETROIT, June 8 (UPI) -- The Detroit Tigers say starter Jeremy Bonderman likely will not pitch again this season because of a blood clot just under his throwing shoulder.

The 25-year-old right-hander's injury was discovered when he underwent a thromblysis -- breaking down of the clot with drugs -- Friday, and an angioplasty Saturday morning.

He was to have started Sunday's game against Cleveland.

"It's something I know I can come back from," he said on the Tigers' Web site. "I look at it as an opportunity to get it right, and when I come back, I'll be healthy and I'll have a fresh arm."

"It's huge," said third-baseman Brandon Inge. "He's a bulldog and he goes out there and gives it his all and tries to give us a chance to win. That's why you respect him."

This season, Bonderman went 3-4 with a 4.29 earned run average.

In 71 1/3 innings, he walked 36 batters and struck out 44.
