NASCAR fines two Sprint Cup drivers

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., May 29 (UPI) -- NASCAR drivers Scott Riggs and Johnny Sauter have been penalized for infractions before last Sunday's Coca Cola 600 in Concord, N.C.

The Sprint Cup drivers both were assessed penalties of 150 driver points.

Their cars were investigated last Saturday for what was called "an issue with the upper-rear wing mounting points."

After further review, NASCAR said Wednesday that both cars were found to be in violation of Sections 12-4-A (actions detrimental to stock car racing) and 20-3.1.3A (wing mounting locations were not as specified by the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Rule Book).

Riggs drives the No. 66 Chevrolet and Sauter the No. 70 Chevy and both had qualified to compete in the longest Sprint Cup race this season last Sunday in Concord.

Their respective team owners -- Joe Custer and Margaret Haas -- were penalized 150 owner points with crew chiefs Bootie Barker and Derick Jennings suspended from the next six Sprint Cup races and fined $100,000 apiece.

"I'm not going to make any excuses," Barker said last Saturday. "The car is my responsibility."
