MLB: N.Y. Mets 9, Colorado 2

DENVER, May 24 (UPI) -- Carlos Beltran's three-run double in the top of the first inning Saturday spurred the New York Mets' 9-2 rout at Colorado.

New York erased any chance for suspense by scoring five times in its opening turn at the plate.

Nick Evans had three hits and two RBI after his minor league contract was purchased from Double-A Binghamton earlier Saturday. David Wright and Carlos Delgado both hit solo homers and catcher Ramon Castro added an RBI and three hits for the Mets, who stopped a five-game losing streak.

Delgado's home run was the 439th of his career.

Winner Claudio Vargas (1-2) surrendered two earned runs and four hits in seven innings.

Matt Holliday hit a solo homer and Jonathan Herrera hit a sacrifice fly for the Rockies, losers of three out of their last four games.

Starting and losing pitcher Jeff Francis (1-5) yielded six earned runs and seven hits in six innings with three walks and eight strikeouts.
