MLB: Oakland 9, Tampa Bay 1

OAKLAND, Calif., May 21 (UPI) -- Dana Eveland's complete game three-hitter Wednesday keyed Oakland's 9-1 rout of Tampa Bay.

In the left-hander's first-ever nine-inning effort, he gave up three hits, including Jonny Gomes' solo homer, which stopped his shutout bid in the top of the eighth.

Eveland (4-3) walked a batter, struck out five, and 63 of his 95 pitches were strikes.

The only runs he would need came on Bobby Crosby's third-inning double. Crosby had three hits and two RBI.

Jack Cust had two-run homers in the fifth and seventh innings.

Three others drove in a run and Emil Brown added two hits for the Athletics, who averted a three-game sweep.

Gabe Gross and Akinori Iwamura had the other hits for the Rays, who had won their last three contests at Oakland, dating back to last season.

Losing pitcher Andy Sonnantine (6-2) gave up seven earned runs on nine hits and a walk in six innings with six strikeouts.
