DETROIT, May 21 (UPI) -- A grand slam homer by Marcus Thames highlighted a seven-run third inning Wednesday and carried Detroit to a 9-4 victory over Seattle.

Rogers, who opened the season with three straight losses, gave up four runs on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Jarrod Washburn (2-6) allowed all nine runs on 12 hits in just 2 1/3 innings.

Detroit had a 2-1 lead before sending 11 men to the plate in the third. Placido Polanco, Gary Sheffield and Miguel Cabrera all singled to start the inning, loading the bases.

Miguel Cabrera then reached on an infield single to drive in a run and Carlos Guillen delivered the fifth straight Detroit single to produce another score.

That brought up Thames, who hit a 1-1 pitch out to left-center. Detroit got another run in the inning on a triple by Brandon Inge and a single by Ivan Rodriguez.
