MLB: San Diego 6, Seattle 4

SEATTLE, May 17 (UPI) -- Chris Young overcame a shaky start Friday and three relievers combined to throw three shutout innings in the San Diego Padres' 6-4 win over Seattle.

The game finished off the first evening of inter-league play this season, during which the American League had seven victories and the National League five. Two inter-league games were rained out.

Young (4-3) gave up four runs over three innings, but settled down to survive six frames with no further damage. Cla Meredith, Heath Bell and Trevor Hoffman shut down the Mariners the rest of the way, with Hoffman getting his eighth save.

The loss went to Miguel Batista, who surrendered nine hits and six runs in 5 1/3 innings. It was Seattle's eighth loss in 10 games.

Tadahito Iguchi singled in one of San Diego's three first-inning runs and then hit a solo homer in the second. Brian Giles also drove in two runs for the Padres with a double in the first and an infield single in the sixth.
