MLB: Boston 5, Detroit 0

DETROIT, May 6 (UPI) -- Tim Wakefield threw eight shutout innings Tuesday and David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez hit back-to-back homers to lead Boston to a 5-0 win over Detroit.

Wakefield (3-1) retired 17 straight hitters after allowing a two-out Carlos Guillen single in the first. Wakefield allowed three base runners -- two on hits and one who reached on an error. He struck out six and walked none as Boston won its fifth straight and Detroit had its fifth straight loss.

The Red Sox had a three-run second inning and home runs from Ortiz and Ramirez in the seventh.

Kevin Cash went 3-for-4 with one RBI. Kevin Youkilis hit two doubles and Ramirez added two singles to go along with his seventh homer of the year.
