NHL: Detroit 4, Colorado 3

DETROIT, April 24 (UPI) -- Johan Franzen scored two of Detroit's four unanswered goals Thursday, giving the Red Wings a 4-3 win over Colorado to open their conference semifinal series.

Chris Osgood -- who took over in goal from Dominik Hasek after the fourth game of the Red Wings' six-game triumph over Nashville in the quarterfinals -- made 18 saves.

Although Osgood gave up three goals -- after allowing just one over the final two games against the Predators -- he saved Thursday's contest with a brilliant save against David Jones with less than two minutes remaining.

Colorado also faces goaltending concerns, having lifted Jose Theodore after he surrendered four goals to Detroit on 16 shots. Peter Budaj did not allow a goal on 20 shots the rest of the way.

Paul Stastny gave Colorado the lead 8:53 into the game, after which Detroit built a 4-1 advantage.

Henrik Zetterberg tied it 53 seconds after Stastny's goal and Daniel Cleary and Franzen scored before the first period ended.

Franzen tallied again on the power play 73 seconds into the second.

John-Michael Liles and Milan Hejduk scored for Colorado during the second, but Osgood stopped everything he faced in the third.

Game 2 will be in Detroit Saturday.
