NHL: Washington 3, Philadelphia 2

WASHINGTON, April 19 (UPI) -- Alexander Semin's goal in the third period Saturday lifted Washington to a 3-2 win over Philadelphia in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinal.

The Capitals trailed the series three games to one, and Semin's power-play goal with just over five minutes left in regulation helped them stave off elimination.

Washington held a 2-1 lead entering the third period and Semin's tally provided insurance because Philadelphia's Darian Hatcher scored at 15:17 creating the final score.

The Capitals' other goals were scored by Nicholas Backstrom (power play in the first) and Sergei Federov in the second.

Washington goaltender Christobal Huet made 30 saves on 32 shots.

The Flyers also got a goal from Vaclav Prospal in the second period. Prospal added an assist while Martin Biron was beaten three times on 26 shots.

Game 6 is in Philadelphia Monday night.
