SAN JOSE, Calif., April 10 (UPI) -- Stephane Yelle scored twice Wednesday and Miikka Kiprusoff made 37 saves in bringing Calgary a 3-2 win over San Jose to open their playoff series.
Calgary took home ice away from the Sharks, who are seeded second in the Western Conference and who out-shot the Flames 39-23.
Yelle scored the game's first goal just 2:47 into the contest by tipping in a shot by Robyn Regehr.
Yelle made it 3-1 with 3:39 left in the second period by again getting his stick on a shot in front of the net and having it slip past Evgeni Nabokov.
Kiprusoff then held off the Sharks until Ryane Clowe scored with 57 seconds remaining in regulation.
San Jose will host Calgary again Thursday in the second game of the series.
