NHL: Ottawa 8, Toronto 2

TORONTO, April 3 (UPI) -- Antoine Vermette posted the first hat trick of his career Thursday as part of an offensive outburst that allowed the Ottawa Senators to romp past Toronto 8-2.

Dany Heatley scored twice and Jason Spezza had a goal and two assists in the Senators' first win in four games. Martin Gerber made 26 saves for Ottawa, which is in sixth place in the Eastern Conference.

Toronto has dropped four out of five.

Spezza put Ottawa in front for good at 2-1 with 2:45 to play in the first period and the Senators turned the game into a rout with a three-goal second.

Ottawa scored twice on the power play and produced three shorthanded goals -- the third of which completed Vermette's hat trick early in the third period.

The Senators lead the league in shorthanded goals with 18.
