Lafleur sues police over arrest warrant

MONTREAL, April 2 (UPI) -- NHL Hall of Fame member Guy Lafleur is suing Montreal police and prosecutors for $3.5 million for the way they issued a warrant for him for perjury in January.

Lafleur, 56, alleges the highly publicized bench warrant for him damaged his reputation and earnings, the Canwest News Service reported Wednesday.

Lafleur's lawyer, Jean-Pierre Rancourt, said such warrants are usually delivered by mail, but the highly publicized announcement was "a disproportionate gesture, an abuse of power that can only be explained by a will to harm the plaintiff."

The warrant involved testimony Lafleur gave last fall about bail conditions for his son, Mark Lafleur, 23. The younger Lafleur is charged with 21 offenses dating to 2004 that include forcible confinement, sexual assault and drug trafficking.

One of the bail conditions was that the younger Lafleur live and sleep at his parents' home, but one of the son's ex-girlfriends told police the senior Lafleur had twice driven his son to a motel for overnight stays with her, the report said.
