After rallying from 18 points down in the first half, West Virginia could not overcome its final deficit and wound up scoring just one point in the game's last 101 seconds.

Xavier (30-6) reached the 30-win mark for the first time in school history and advanced to the finals of the West Region.

West Virginia's Joe Alexander forced overtime when he hit a turnaround jumper with 15 seconds left in regulation. He was fouled on the shot, but he missed the free throw that could have won the game for the 12th-seeded Mountaineers (26-11).

Xavier, seeded third, was paced by 26 points from Josh Duncan. Alexander finished with 18.
