RALEIGH, N.C., March 22 (UPI) -- A career-best 31 points from Sonny Weems Friday sent Arkansas to a surprisingly easy 86-72 victory over Indiana in the NCAA Tournament's East Region.

Darian Townes added 17 points and 12 rebounds for ninth-seeded Arkansas (23-11), which shut down Big Ten scoring champion Eric Gordon to reach the second round of the tournament for the first time in nine seasons.

Arkansas shot 54 percent and made eight three-point shots.

D.J. White scored 22 points and Armon Bassett had 21 for Indiana (25-8). The Hoosiers appeared headed for an outstanding season before Coach Kelvin Sampson resigned last month amid accusations of violating NCAA rules.

Dan Dakich coached the team for the final seven games.

Gordon made only three of 15 shots from the field and scored eight points. Arkansas, which reached the title game of the SEC Tournament, led by only two with 12:30 to play before pulling away down the stretch.
