NHL: N.Y. Rangers 2, New Jersey 1 (SO)

NEWARK, N.J., March 19 (UPI) -- Nigel Dawes' shootout goal Wednesday lifted the New York Rangers past the New Jersey Devils 2-1.

He scored in the shootout's second round, beating long-time Rangers' nemesis Martin Brodeur.

The contest was knotted at one after three periods because New Jersey's Dainius Zubrus and Chris Drury of New York traded goals in the first and second periods, respectively.

There was no scoring in the overtime.

Also in regulation, Henrik Lundqvist stopped 17 of 18 shots for the Rangers, who with 87 points solidified their lead over Boston in the Eastern Conference playoff chase.

Brodeur gave up one goal on 21 shots before Dawes' heroics in the shootout.

Despite the loss, the Devils lead the Atlantic Division with 91 points.
