COL BKB: Ala.-Birm. 80, Virginia Com. 77

RICHMOND, Va., March 19 (UPI) -- Reggie Huffman scored 21 points Wednesday, sparking Alabama-Birmingham's 80-77 victory over Virginia Commonwealth in the first round of the NIT.

The Blazers made 11 three-point shots and fought off a second-half comeback to set up a second-round matchup with Virginia Tech. Alabama-Birmingham improved to 23-10.

Robert Vaden added 16 points and Lawrence Kinnard had 13 for the Blazers.

Virginia Commonwealth (24-8) was led by 22 points and nine assists from Eric Maynor.

Alabama-Birmingham took a 38-27 lead after the first half.
