Isles' DiPietro has hip checked

UNIONDALE, N.Y., March 18 (UPI) -- New York Islanders goaltender Rick DiPietro, who underwent an MRI on his injured hip Tuesday, could be out the rest of the season.

DiPietro, 26, was out of the lineup for the Islanders' contest Tuesday against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Wade Dubielewicz started in his place. Joey Morrison was recalled from Bridgeport of the American Hockey League to serve as the Islanders' backup goaltender.

DiPietro suffered the injury during the All-Star Game skills competition Jan. 26. If the MRI reveals any significant injury, he will most likely be shut down for New York's final games of the season.

DiPietro, the first overall pick in the 2000 draft, has played in 63 games this season, posting a record of 26-28-7, a 2.82 goals against average, a .902 save percentage and three shutouts.
