Montreal's other goals were scored by Alexei Kovalev and Guillaume Latendresse in the third.

Halak stopped all 30 New York shots for the Canadiens, whose victory secured first place in the Northeast Division.

Overall, they have won seven of their last 10 games and all four against the Islanders this season when the Islanders scored just three times.

The win moved Montreal back to the top of the Northeast Division with 89 points, two better than idle Ottawa.

Fellow goaltender Rick DiPietro was beaten three times on 29 shots for the Islanders, who suffered their fifth straight loss.
