BUFFALO, N.Y., March 14 (UPI) -- Derek Roy scored twice Friday, one of the tallies coming during a four-goal opening period that lifted Buffalo to a 7-1 blasting of Carolina.
Buffalo halted a four-game losing streak and inched within two points of Philadelphia for the eighth spot in the Eastern Conference.

Ryan Miller made 27 saves and his task became easy when Daniel Paille, Adam Mair, Roy and Paul Gaustad all scored in the first period. Buffalo's first two goals came 22 seconds apart.
After giving up four goals on just seven shots, Cam Ward was replaced by John Grahame with more than six minutes remaining in the first period.
Carolina had a five-game winning streak snapped.
