Americans succeed at Indian Wells

INDIAN WELLS, Calif., March 14 (UPI) -- Vania King led a parade of Americans into the second round of the Pacific Life Open Thursday with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Anne Kremer.

American wild cards Ahsha Rolle and Melanie Oudin also advanced.

None of the 32 seeded players have played in this 12-day tournament, all having received first-round byes.

Rolle advanced with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Madison Brengle and Oudin defeated Maret Ani 7-5, 6-2.

Other winners in first-round matches included Aravane Rezai, Greta Arn, Gisela Dulko, Casey Dellacqua, Ioana Raluca Olaru and Kaia Kanepi.

The defending champion is Daniela Hantuchova. Two of her three career titles have come at this tournament.
