NHL: Boston 3, Atlanta 2 (SO)

BOSTON, March 1 (UPI) -- Phil Kessel's goal in the second round of a shootout Saturday lifted Boston to a 3-2 win over Atlanta and its sixth straight victory.

On the game-winning goal, Kessel sprinted up the ice, pulled to the left and tucked the puck under the leg of Johan Hedberg.

Also in the shootout, Tim Thomas denied Atlanta's Slava Kozlov, Erik Christensen and Ilya Kovalchuk.

Regulation ended in a 2-2 tie after Boston center David Krejci scored his third goal this season at 11:53 of the third. Glen Murray scored the Bruins' first goal.

Thomas stopped 26 of 28 shots for the Bruins, who won the season series 3-1.

Jim Slater's third goal of the season had given Atlanta a 2-1 advantage in the second period. Atlanta's other goal was Ilya Kovalchuk's 42nd at 6:41 of the first on a penalty shot.

Hedberg stopped 33 of 35 shots for the Thrashers, who have lost five straight and eight of 10 on the road.
