NHL: San Jose 3, Philadelphia 1

PHILADELPHIA, Feb. 21 (UPI) -- Milan Michalek and Douglas Murray scored third-period goals Thursday to give the San Jose Sharks a 3-1 win over Philadelphia in a battle of struggling teams.

San Jose ended a five-game losing streak and Philadelphia lost its ninth in a row. Philadelphia's record for most consecutive games without a win is 12, established during February and March of 1999.

Jonathan Cheechoo also scored for the Sharks. Joe Thornton had two assists and Evgeni Nabokov made 26 saves.

Martin Biron stopped 37 shots for the Flyers, but it was not enough to prevent the franchise from suffering another setback on a day already filled with bad news. Prior to the game, it was announced that Philadelphia forward Simon Gagne would sit out the rest of the season due to post-concussion syndrome.

Michalek gave San Jose a 2-1 lead at 3:35 of the third and Murray scored just 42 seconds later.
