WASHINGTON, Feb. 20 (UPI) -- Mike Comrie produced the only goal in a shootout Wednesday, handing the New York Islanders a 3-2 win over Washington.
Comrie's goal came on the final chance of the third round. He beat Olaf Kolzig with a backhander, boosting the Islanders to their fifth straight win. They are within one point of fourth-place Philadelphia in the Atlantic Division.
The win went to Rick DiPietro, who made 28 saves. Kolzig gave up two goals on 19 shots in regulation as part of the Capitals' third loss in four games.
New York overcame a 2-0 deficit to force the overtime with the final goal coming from Josef Vasicek with 8:51 to play in the third.
