NEW YORK, Feb. 16 (UPI) -- Sean Avery scored twice Saturday to boost the New York Rangers past the Buffalo Sabres 5-1.
The left wing's seventh goal this season came after just 10 seconds had elapsed in the first period and was the fastest by a Ranger to start a game in the history of Madison Square Garden. Avery's eighth at 7:47 of the second was New York's final score.
Ryan Callahan, Brandon Dubinsky and Brendan Shanahan scored once each for the Rangers.
Dubinsky and Jaromir Jagr both had two assists and netminder Henrik Lundqvist stopped 29 of 30 shots for the Rangers, who had not played since a 3-2 overtime loss last Sunday at Washington.
Thomas Vanek's 21st at 13:02 of the third was Buffalo's only goal.
New York's starting goalie, Ryan Miller, was chased after giving up four goals on 11 shots. His replacement, Jocelyn Thibault stopped 20 of 21 shots for the Sabres, whose three-game winning streak ended.
