Redskins introduce new coach, Jim Zorn

ASHBURN, Va., Feb. 10 (UPI) -- The Washington Redskins Sunday introduced their next head coach, Jim Zorn, at a press conference at team headquarters in Ashburn, Va.

Zorn was a surprise choice Saturday by team owner Dan Snyder, since he had just been hired Jan. 25 as offensive coordinator.

"We knew of Jim's stellar offensive reputation, so we hired him as coordinator, but we also suspected he would be a strong candidate for head coach," Snyder said. "We stayed true to our commitment to interview every candidate."

The Redskins' head coaching job opened up when Joe Gibbs retired Jan. 8.

Zorn, who has no experience as head coach, was hired after Steve Spagnuolo decided to remain the defensive coordinator for the Super Bowl champion New York Giants.

Zorn, 54, was Seattle's quarterbacks coach for the past seven years.

Snyder also interviewed former NFL head coaches Jim Fassel and Steve Mariucci and Indianapolis assistant coach Ron Meeks.
