Reports: Redskins hire Jim Zorn

ASHBURN, Va., Feb. 9 (UPI) -- Published reports Saturday said the Washington Redskins have elevated newly hired offensive coordinator Jim Zorn to head coach.

If true, it means Zorn beat out the assumed front-runner, former New York Giants Coach Jim Fassel, and another former NFL head coach, Steve Mariucci.

Redskins owner Dan Snyder has angered some fans because of the many names mentioned as possible successors to the retired Joe Gibbs -- especially the names of Fassel and Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, who interviewed for the Washington job this week but decided to remain with the Super Bowl champion.

One report came from the Washington Post, which said Zorn could be announced as the new coach by 3 p.m. Sunday, and that a league source said he would get a five-year deal.

Zorn has been Seattle's quarterbacks coach for the past seven years and played the position for 11 seasons for the Seahawks.

The 54-year-old Zorn also was the quarterbacks coach for the Detroit Lions from 1998-2000.
