Two critical service breaks in the second set and a save on a potential Mauresmo break keyed her victory.

Also, No. 3 Marion Bartoli fended off French compatriot Virginie Razzano 6-1, 7-6 (7-3); fourth-seeded Elena Dementieva of Russia downed Ukrainian Kateryna Bondarenko 7-5, 6-2; and rising Hungarian Agnes Szavay upset No. 2 seed Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia 7-6 (7-4), 6-1.

"I think I have my confidence back," Szavay said. "If I keep going like this, I think I can do really well here."

In Saturday's semis, Szavay tangles with Dementieva, while Bartoli faces the challenge of Chakvetadze.

Sunday's champion will earn a check worth $95,500.
