NHL: Dallas 1, Minnesota 0

ST. PAUL, Minn., Feb. 7 (UPI) -- Mike Smith, filling in for the ailing Marty Turco, recorded his second shutout of the season Thursday in Dallas' 1-0 victory over Minnesota.

Turco did not make the trip to Minnesota because of a sore neck. Smith stepped in and stopped 25 shots to give Dallas its fifth straight win.

Niklas Hagman scored the game's lone goal early in the third period. Niklas Backstrom stopped 25 of 26 shots for the Wild, who lost their second game in a row after a three-game winning streak.

An outstanding save by Smith on a shot by Marian Gaborik started the rush that led to the Stars' goal. Hagman faked out Backstrom and scored with a backhand flip.

Prior to the game, the Wild honored Dallas forward Mike Modano, who played for the Minnesota North Stars before they moved to Dallas. Earlier this year, Modano became the NHL's all-time leading scorer among American-born players.
