Eddie Sutton gets win No. 800

SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 3 (UPI) -- University of San Francisco Coach Eddie Sutton is basking in the glow of his 800th career victory, an 85-82 decision Saturday at Pepperdine.

It was his fourth try to reach the elusive plateau and it happened after his team scrapped its way back from a 19-point second-half deficit (53-34 with 17:18 left) to break a three-game losing streak.

"It'll always be a special game," he told the Los Angeles Times. "It's hard to come from 19 points down in the second half on the road. That doesn't happen very often."

Sutton, who is second in Division I victories among active coaches, trailing only Texas Tech's Bob Knight, came out of retirement mid-season to coach the Dons on an interim basis for Jessie Evans, who took a leave absence in December.

He also has coached at the Division I level with Creighton, Arkansas, Kentucky and his alma mater, Oklahoma State.
