COL BKB: Louisville 71, Marquette 51

LOUISVILLE, Ky., Jan. 17 (UPI) -- A 20-point performance by Terrence Williams and a strong defensive effort Thursday carried Louisville to a 71-51 victory over No. 13 Marquette.

The Cardinals held Marquette to almost 30 points under its season average in their Big East Conference encounter.

David Padgett added 17 points and Derrick Caracter had 11 for the Cardinals, winners of four in a row.

Louisville (13-4, 3-1 Big East) moved into a share of first place in the conference with Pittsburgh, Georgetown and Notre Dame.

Marquette (13-3, 3-2) was led by Jerel McNeal with 16 points.

The Golden Eagles came into the game averaging 80.1 points per game, but they shot just 30 percent from the floor. They missed all 12 of their three-point attempts and made only two of their first 20 tries from the field.
