University offered $200K to oust officials

SEATTLE, Jan. 10 (UPI) -- A University of Washington alumnus, unhappy with the football program, offered the school $200,000 to fire the head coach and athletic director.

Ed Hansen, a multimillionaire and former mayor of Everett, Wash., made the offer in an e-mail sent to University President Mark Emmert, The Seattle Times reported Thursday.

"By this letter, I hereby pledge to contribute a minimum of $100,000 towards a law school scholarship within 90 days, conditioned upon the termination of Ty Willingham as football coach," Hansen wrote.

Hansen made a similar pledge if the school fired Athletic Director Todd Turner and said, "I do not intend to contribute any further funds to the athletic department as long as these two gentlemen are employed by the university."

Turner actually resigned in December and leaves his post at the end of January, the newspaper reported.

Hansen said in view of Turner's resignation he was re-evaluating that part of his offer.

The Huskies were 4-9 this year, their third straight losing season.

Hansen's e-mail was one of hundreds the Times received in a public records request. Hansen said he never intended the letter go public. Emmert called the offer "grossly inappropriate."
