Guccione continues upset run in Sydney

SYDNEY, Jan. 10 (UPI) -- Wild-card entrant Chris Guccione Thursday defeated a second seeded foe in as many days and reached the semifinals of the Medibank International in Sydney.

Guccione, coming off a win over sixth-seeded Lleyton Hewitt, survived a match point in claiming a 4-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 victory over fourth-seeded Tomas Berdych. He won't have to face another seeded player in the tournament, however, because Berdych was the last one standing in the event.

Guccione next goes against Radek Stepanek, whose resume this week includes a win over second-seeded Tommy Robredo. To get to the semis, Stepanek Thursday defeated Agustin Calleri 6-2, 6-4.

Dmitry Tursunov, who upset top-seeded Richard Gasquet earlier in the week, beat Sebastien Grosjean 6-4, 6-2 to gain a semifinal berth. He will face Fabrice Santoro, whose upset this week was of defending champion and third-seeded James Blake. Santoro topped Evgeny Korolev 6-3, 6-3 in the quarterfinals.
