Univ. of Georgia president seeks playoff

ATHENS, Ga., Jan. 8 (UPI) -- University of Georgia President Michael Adams wrote a letter to NCAA President Myles Brand Tuesday, calling for a college football playoff system.

The letter was sent a day after LSU was crowned the Bowl Championship Series champion following its 38-24 win over Ohio State. The Bulldogs, left out of the BCS title game, routed previously unbeaten Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl 41-10.

Adams, chairman of the NCAA executive committee, said he has been "troubled by the commercial influence over how the college football season is played out, particularly with regard to the postseason bowls."

Adams called the BCS a "beauty contest largely stage-managed by the networks."

Adams asked Brand to create a committee from the NCAA's Division I Board of Directors to look into possibly staging a championship tournament in January, following the bowl season.

Adams said the winners of the four major bowl games -- Rose, Sugar, Orange and Fiesta -- would play the second Saturday in January, with the championship game the following weekend.
