Davenport wins in 2008 opener

AUCKLAND, New Zealand, Jan. 5 (UPI) -- Lindsay Davenport kicked off a new year Saturday by capturing the ASB Classic in New Zealand with a straight sets victory over Aravane Rezai.

Davenport returned to the world of competitive tennis after the birth of her first child and has won 18 of 19 matches since.

She defeated Rezai 6-2, 6-2 and established herself as a threat in the upcoming first major event of the season -- the Australian Open.
