Mathieu, in the quarterfinals, faces another determined Australian wild-card entrant in Joseph Sirianni, who advanced at the expense of Sam Querrey 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-3. It will be Sirianni's first time to reach an ATP tournament quarterfinal.

In other second-round play, Benjamin Becker got past Michael Russell 6-4, 6-4 and Michael Llodra defeated Evgeny Korolev 7-6 (7-3), 6-3. Llodra and Becker are paired against each other in Friday's quarters.

The second-round wraps up Thursday with Lleyton Hewitt, who has won his home-town tournament twice, going against Jose Acasuso.
