The new GM replaces Randy Mueller, who was removed from the position by Parcells two days earlier.

Ireland was with the Cowboys for seven years, the past three as vice president of college and pro scouting. He previously was a national scout and also scouted for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Miami won only one of its 16 games this season.

Ireland said he was committed to "making the Dolphins into winners once again."
