Portis named top NFC player on offense

NEW YORK, Dec. 27 (UPI) -- Washington running back Clinton Portis is the NFC Offensive Player of the Week.

The six-year veteran totaled 124 yards (76 rushing, 48 receiving), rushed for a touchdown and threw for another in the Redskins' 32-21 victory at Minnesota.

Other NFC honors went to New York Giants linebacker Kawika Mitchell (defense) and Chicago Bears punter Brad Maynard (special teams).

Mitchell recorded six tackles, two sacks, a forced fumble and returned an interception 20 yards for a touchdown, helping the Giants clinched a playoff berth with a 38-21 win at Buffalo.

It is Mitchell's first career POW award, and the first for a Giants' linebacker since Jesse Armstead in 1997.

Maynard punted four times, allowing only one return, and placed one punt inside the 20-yard line in the Bears' 35-7 rout of Green Bay. He also booted three extra points and handled the snaps on two Chicago field goals.
